How to get an ADHD assessment as an adult

A real assessment is a conversation about your whole life, not a quiz. Here is who does it, what happens, and how to spot a bad one.

Who can diagnose ADHD

In the US, a psychiatrist, a psychologist, or a primary care doctor or nurse practitioner who is comfortable with adult ADHD can diagnose it, and so can a physician assistant. Most psychologists can diagnose but can’t prescribe. Many people start with their primary care doctor, who either assesses them or refers them on.

What a proper assessment includes

  • A detailed interview about your symptoms now and as a child (before age 12).
  • How symptoms affect at least two areas of life, such as work, study, home, money or relationships.
  • Rating scales, often filled in by you and by someone who knows you well, like a partner or parent.
  • Checking for things that look similar or come along with ADHD: anxiety, depression, sleep problems, substance use, autism, thyroid problems.
  • A physical health check if medication is likely, including blood pressure and pulse.

What to bring

  • Your result from our 6-question self-test, printed.
  • Old school reports, if you have them; comments like “daydreams” or “doesn’t finish work” are useful.
  • Three or four concrete examples of how it gets in your way now.
  • A list of medicines and any history of heart problems in you or your family.

Red flags

Be wary of any service that diagnoses you after a short questionnaire, promises a prescription up front, or ties the price to getting medication. The founder of one large online ADHD company was sentenced to six years in prison over how its stimulant prescriptions were handed out. A good clinician is willing to say “this looks more like anxiety” or “let’s check your sleep first”.

Women and late diagnosis

Women are often diagnosed years later than men and are more likely to be treated for anxiety or depression first. If that sounds familiar, say so. Read more in ADHD in women.

Online assessments

Video assessments can be fine if they follow the same steps above. US rules that let clinicians prescribe stimulants by video without an in-person visit are extended through 31 December 2026, and new permanent rules are being finalised. Check the current rules with your provider.
